What is identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal details for fraudulent purposes.

For example, after obtaining your personal details, a thief applies for a loan in your name. When no repayments are made, the account finally falls into arrears. You might not discover the theft of your identity until an application you make for credit is declined due to the unpaid loan fraudulently taken out in your name.

While no one case is the same, it can take 18 months* for a victim to discover that his or her identity has been stolen. A thief can steal your identity by raiding your bin for discarded statements and receipts; skimming your credit card; tricking you with phishing emails; attacking your computer with spyware and viruses; or by using other means.

The consequences of full-blown identity theft to you and your family can be financially and emotionally devastating. Clearing your name and restoring your credit if your identity is stolen can cost, up to £8,000¹ and 10 working weeks².

BT Identity Protection is arranged by Card Protection Plan Limited and underwritten by Homecare Insurance Limited. Both companies are members of the CPP group of companies and are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

BT Identity Protection is available at £44.99 a year, or £3.75 a month for the first 12 months only, when you purchase online. Afterwards, price is £59.99 a year.
